Postpartum closing ceremony

The Mexican postpartum closing ceremony is a traditional ritual typically held at the end of the postpartum period. Its purpose is to support the mother’s physical and emotional recovery and to celebrate the beginning of a new life chapter.
Postpartum regeneration and emotional balance are essential parts of the maternal experience. The safe atmosphere created during the ceremony helps mothers share their story and feelings, and allows them to relax and recharge emotionally and physically.
During the ritual, the mother receives special attention and care. She is welcomed with conversation, hot Mexican cocoa, fragrant tea, a flower-petal bath, and a relaxing massage. At the end of the day, with traditional Mexican Rebozo shawls we “close” the bones opened by birth, then celebrate the new life stage as she symbolically steps through a gateway.
The ceremony lasts 6–8 hours. It’s recommended when the mother feels comfortable leaving her baby with someone else for that time (breastfeeding breaks every 2–3 hours can be included). It can be held at the end of the postpartum period or later — even months or years after birth — whenever the mother wishes.
I hold the ceremony either alone or together with a doula colleague. Depending on the mother’s wishes, the second person can also be the father/partner.
